Pyrenees July 2011: Santander to Arreau

Santander to Arreau – 277 miles

The bikes had been sent down to the bowels of the boat so we were among the last off the Pont Aven in the morning. With a long ride ahead we had known there wouldn’t be time to go across the Pyrenees to Arreau, our destination for the next three nights.

So we headed for the A8 toll motorway towards the French border and then the A64 which runs East-West on the French side of the Pyrenees. Exiting the A64 at Tarbes we got on the D935 to Sainte Marie de Campan and then the D938 which took us up and over the Col D’Aspin and down into Arreau.

Kyle had booked 2 apartments in the Residence Balcon de Neste where he and Kay had stayed the previous year when they watched the Tour de France. The apartments weren’t luxurious but perfectly serviceable, had secure bike parking and were only a 5-minute walk from the centre of town.

After a few beers at a town centre bar we found a restaurant, had a decent dinner and retired for the night.
